Recommended Training Manuals and Books

To begin your training you should ideally have a "Jane's Aircraft Recognition Guide 4th Revised Edition" it is the most valuable training manual for Aircraft Recce anyone could want, it is known as the "Bible of Aircraft Recce" it can be ordered through book stores or online, a new edition comes out in November this year, you can pick up the older version at really competitive prices. Why not ask your Civilian Committee to sponsor several copies for training the Cadets and Staff.

Jane's Aircraft Recognition Guide 5th Edition has just been released from the printers and is available to order from you book supplier. Cover Price £20

Available through  www.computer-manuals.co.uk @ £18.00 plus £2.50 P&P (Orders over £25.00 free P&P) Price updated - 27Jan 10

Flash Cards

You can make "Flash Cards" by cutting out aircraft pictures from the DRJ or any aircraft magazine and Pritt Stick, Gloy Paste or good old PVA glue these to card from recycled boxes, remember to write the name of the aircraft on a sticker and put it on the back of the flash card, batch up the pictures in tens or twelve's and use them for revision or hand them around so that cadets can test each other. I find these are helpful to" warm up the cadets" prior to a lesson of Air Recce. The flash cards can be stored in something like an old clean ice cream tub with a snap on lid, write on the lid what type of aircraft are inside. Remember if you are travelling to or from an activity the cards could be stored in your minibus and handed around for some training, if you go on exercise again hand round some cards during a period of relaxation.

Materials to make Flash Cards

PowerPoint Presentations

PowerPoint Presentations are also away of putting a training package together ask if cadets and staff have aircraft photos on their digital cameras which you can use, beware if downloading from the Internet you may require copyright permission to use someone else's pictures. Ask cadets, staff and parents if they have any old aircraft photos which they NO LONGER REQUIRE, label them up and use for training. The PowerPoint presentations mimic the older slide show presentations which us older spotters remember so well, they are easy to put together as sessions of 25 to 30 slides with aircraft on and a blank slide in between each aircraft slide which will give time to discuss any points raised. Once you have set up a template in PowerPoint store it and use it each time you want to put a session together, remember to put your presentations into subject categories. When you have sufficient presentations ask the cadets to bring in their Pen Drives so that you can download and get them to revise and then next time round they can give you the answers.

Dedicated Aircraft Recce Notice Board

Somewhere on your squadron there must be spare space on a notice board which you can set up for Aircraft Recce, cut out pictures, name them and pin them up, we have found this useful as a cadet may want to visit the board on a regular basis to brush up on Aircraft Recce without disturbing a class to get into the Aircraft Recce cupboard to get any training aids out. Other cadets may have photos they want to add so that the collection grows to a reasonable size then you can change the pictures on a regular basis.

And finally....

Hope this helps you kick off your training, if you get stuck or want any more help or advice then let me know we can share any "Best Practice". Thank you so far for the support!
