RSGB Foundation Licence Course - Jan 2012

Cadets and staff from the squadron have just completed their two day course RSGB Course with two members obtaining a pass. The Course was provided by members of the CDARC - Cambridge and District Amateur Radio Club with Peter Howell- M0DCV taking on the role as Lead instructor. Cadets had both theory and practical sessions during the weekend with some revision on the Saturday night. Contact were made using HF equipment to prearranged club operators. The course also has cadets from No's 22 (Sandy) and 73 (Huntingdon) Squadrons, they also had cadet passes over the weekend. Candidates are now allowed to apply for their own call signs and able to operate Amateur Radio equipment with limitations. Due to the success of the course the squadron will be running future courses this year again in conjunction with CDARC.

Squadron Presentation

A presentation took place recently at Headquarters of No 2500 (St Neots) Squadron by members of the Huntingdon Amateur Radio Society (HARS).

For the second year running Cadets and Staff undertook car parking, car unloading and setting up duties at last year’s HARS Annual Radio Rally in St Neots. Cambridgeshire. Committee Members from HARS consisting of Steve Watson G1KWF– Chairman, David Leech G7DIU– Secretary, Sqn Ldr David Howlett RAF Ret’d M0VTG and John Shere M0JWS made the presentation to Cadet Flight Sergeant Jade Stimson. Thanks go to the HARS for their donation, it was much appreciated. Afterwards the HARS members held an ‘open forum’ with the cadets asking questions on many different radio, communications and engineering subjects, the members also promoted radio and it’s various uses over the years and Amateur Radio as a hobby for life. Three members of the Squadron are already Foundation licence holders since December 2010 and have 2 cadets and one staff member taking part in another Foundation course to be held at the Squadron Headquarters in mid January 2012.

Cadets and Staff awarded RSGB Foundation Callsigns

Personnel from 2500 Squadron attended in December 2010 the RSGB Foundation Course run by Cambridge and District Amateur Radio Club.

After carrying out two days of theory and practical in Amateur Radio they passed and have been granted their own Mike 6 Amateur Radio Callsigns.

Central & East Region HF Radio Exercise - Sunday 21st March 2010

Cadets contacted up to 20 Squadrons on different frequencies during the day, closest Harlow Sqn and furthest Hollywell Squadron in North Wales on 30 Watts of power using the Clansman PRC-320 HF Set. Also many contacts in Dorset, Norfolk, Suffolk, Midlands, Buckinghamshire and Essex.

Following on from a training session held in St Neots on Sun 21 Jan 2010, cadets and staff from 2500 and 73 Sqn were able to hear a special event station call sign GB4RNLI on the squadrons HF Receiver, contact was made via the call signs email facility and a QSL card has arrived from GB4RNLI. Shown below.

Coincidentally the picture on the right was also received and was taken approximately 3/4 of an hour on the same day as the cadets heard the call sign!
